The Camino de Santiago: Spain’s Pilgrimage Trail for Modern Travelers

A waymarked trail along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route

Northern Spain, flexible length, walking

The Camino Francés is the classic 500-mile pilgrimage route from the French border to Santiago de Compostela, but you don’t need a month to experience it — most modern walkers do a section, and the final 100km from Sarria is the minimum distance to earn the official Compostela certificate.

The route is genuinely well set up for independent travelers: yellow waymarkers every few hundred meters, albergues (pilgrim hostels) roughly every 10–15km, and a rhythm of walking that most reasonably fit travelers can sustain without prior hiking experience.

May, June, September, and October avoid both the July–August heat and the busiest pilgrim crowds — worth timing deliberately, since accommodation along the route is first-come, first-served in many albergues.

Typical range: €25–€60 per night for pilgrim accommodation, considerably less than typical Spanish lodging.

Sephari’s Outdoor & Adventure Gear collection has the broken-in footwear and blister prevention this trail’s daily mileage demands.
